  ODBC for DB2 LUW

For both third-party commercial applications and custom applications, the HiT ODBC family of products provides high-performance, secure, reliable access to DB2 data. Enterprises looking for an ODBC solution to access DB2 data should consider HiT ODBC products for the following reasons:

  • Effective use of native IBM protocols for performance and reliability
  • Non-invasive approach with no software to install on DB2 servers
  • Secure data transmission when used with HiT SafeConduct for data encryption and digital certificate authentication
  • Tools for diagnosing problems and monitoring server activity
  • Developer editions with source code examples

Overview of HiT ODBC for IBM DB2 LUW and z/OS

HiT ODBC/DB2 (for IBM DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, VSE/VM, UNIX, Linux, and Windows platforms) is Windows SQL client middleware for DB2 data access of custom applications and third party products. HiT ODBC/DB2 accepts standard Windows Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) function calls, translates these into native DB2 SQL for high-performance, and communicates with the DB2 server to access, retrieve, and update DB2 data. Leveraging the IBM Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA) protocol standard, HiT ODBC/DB2 uses native IBM server programs and does not require any additional DB2 server software.

HiT ODBC/DB2 supports full SQL functionality for maximum application performance including stored procedures, multiple result sets, static SQL/packages, multi-threading support. ODBC level 3 compliance offers developers powerful data access techniques, catalog functionality, access to environmental attributes, extended data types, SQL batch support, error reporting, and ANSI SQL-92 alignment.

HiT/ODBC DB2 can be used with all major application development tools that support the Windows ODBC standard. Additionally, hundreds of third-party software products can use HiT ODBC/DB2 for business intelligence, decision support, query/reporting, data replication, and data mining. Support is also included for the most common DB2 server single and double character sets. Multi-threading support and re-entrancy support ensure the scalability and high performance for client applications. As sixth generation middleware, HiT ODBC/DB2 is extremely reliable and has evolved a robust feature set.

HiT ODBC/DB2 includes extensive on-line documentation covering ODBC data source configurations, ODBC functions, SQL grammar, using DB2 stored procedures, static SQL/package use, tracing, debugging, and diagnostics.

HiT ODBC/DB2 supports the following database standards: ODBC core and level 3 conformance, ANSI SQL-92, X/Open and ISO CLI catalog function column name standards, DRDA level 4, ADO and ADO.NET.

HiT ODBC/DB2 supports TCP/IP and APPC connectivity transports to DB2 servers.

HiT ODBC/DB2 supports the following versions of DB2:

  • DB2 for Linux
  • DB2 for UNIX (AIX)
  • DB2 for Windows
  • DB2 for z/OS

HiT ODBC for DB2: Client and Server Edition

Security

HiT ODBC/DB2 can be used with HiT SSL Server, an all-Java, standards-based encryption and authentication server to secure SQL data flows over TCP/IP networks. It prevents unauthorized access to data by transparently enabling the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol between HiT ODBC DB2 and the system where HiT SSL Server is installed.

In the Server version, HiT ODBC/DB2 allows an administrator to pre-define data sources for server and downstream Windows clients. These data sources are maintained at the server and cannot be modified.

HiT ODBC/DB2 also supports IBM DB2 password expiration security. A read-only version driver is included for query-only client applications.

Developer Edition

The HiT ODBC/DB2 Developer Edition includes a C# toolkit. The C# toolkit provides sample projects/forms demonstrating working source code that connects, queries, retrieves, and updates DB2 data using ADO.NET.

The Developer Edition significantly cuts application development time by providing developers working C# samples to query and update DB2 tables and retrieve DB2 data for redirection to applications. Included source code demonstrates connections using ADO.NET recordsets, executing stored procedures, retrieving table data, inserting table data, and displaying results.

Server Version

HiT ODBC Server/DB2 (for DB2 for LUW or for DB2 for z/OS) provides a secure, centralized, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) service for Windows Server applications and for ODBC client applications. HiT ODBC Server/DB2 enables Windows Server software, such as Microsoft IIS, access to DB2 data and thereby to clients of the server software. HiT ODBC Server/DB2 enables NT Server software, such as Microsoft IIS, access to DB2 data and thereby to clients of the server software.

Configurations

HiT ODBC Server/DB2 can be used in two configurations:

  • Server ODBC Applications

A Windows NT server application or service locally uses the ODBC service to access DB2 data and redirect it where necessary. For example, using the Microsoft IIS web server and Active Server Pages, downstream web browser clients can access DB2 data.

  • For Client ODBC Applications

A thin client presents the ODBC API to a Windows client application and transports the ODBC commands to the ODBC service. Only server-defined data sources are available to client ODBC applications. For example, a custom Visual Basic application uses the thin client ODBC API to access DB2 data via the ODBC service.
